Panel: The State of Construction: How We Create a More Inclusive & Equitable Industry

9/22/2020

"You need to really be vulnerable and be okay with looking at the numbers and looking at the past and saying 'we need to do better'." - Mary Person (F.H. Paschen)
The past few months have brought historic and overwhelming change to almost every aspect of our lives—in public health, the economy, politically, socially and in almost any sector you can imagine. And while some of this change has brought devastation to many, especially Black and Brown communities who have been historically underfunded and underserved, it has also brought much needed conversations in places and spaces that have needed to be transformed and the construction industry is no exception. We brought together our Executive Director, Manny Rodriguez, Shahara Byford (Power Construction), Mary Person (F.H. Paschen) and Scott Simpson (Scott Simpson Design + Build) for a conversation discuss around  the changes that have been happening in construction and the work that still needs to be done in order to create a diverse and inclusive industry.

We Must Act.

9/1/2020

Another day, another hashtag.

We have no words, other than, enough. Enough of the state sanctioned violence against Black and Brown communities, enough of the hypocrisy we see in interactions between police and white assailants with weapons of war and unarmed Black individuals, and enough of the inaction by our leaders. If we don’t want more injustice, things must change. And it is on us to take action.

That is why we are calling on you, our RW family, to act. Each and everyone of us have more power than we realize, and if we hope to see this violence and racism end, then we must use our power and voice.

Here are just a few of the ways you can act and make your voice heard:
  • Register to vote (https://ova.elections.il.gov/) & make sure your community does the same
  • Complete the census (https://2020census.gov/) & make sure your community does the same
  • Have difficult conversations with yourself and others about racial biases and systemic injustices and build ways in which you can help create more equity and opportunity.

RW is involved with several advocacy coalitions to identify and eliminate unjust policies that perpetuate systemic oppression. In the coming months we will be uplifting specific policy initiatives supporting communities. If we want these policies to become reality, then we will need your support, your network, and your voice.

We will need every call, every vote, and every voice. We need you.
